So, does anyone else see that we’re now facing the deadliest threat to our national security since Sputnik One’s launch in the mid 1950’s, and if so, do they notice the reaction of Americans to the huge threat we now face is slightly more subdued? When Sputnik was launched in the depths of the ’Cold War’ by the Soviets to win the all important Space Race, Americans were scared and shocked. Winning the Space Race was all important because it meant you dropped Atomic bombs on their heads from Outer Space; losing meant they nuked you from Outer Space.

American’s weren’t worried about losing the Space Race until it was lost; that’s because in the eyes of most Americans if one thing was a truism it was that the United States of America always came out on top. It was a truism until Sputnik One was launched, anyway; now Godless commie pinky’s were going to nuke us by dropping Atomic bombs on our American heads from space! We were doomed!

We reacted, as well; renewing our commitment to the space race and to science overall, strengthening our defenses and our economy, virtually all of the people in American society all trying to desperately push the U.S. ahead at the same time most thought we’d be nuked at any moment.

We weren’t; in fact the Soviet Union never wanted to exterminate us because our love of God, liberty, freedom, and democratic ways were too big of a threat for communism to be allowed to survive. That was a bunch of hooey American leader made up to justify otherwise indefensible national policies and decisions most of us believed. But we did think it true, and we reacted to the threat when Sputnik One’s launch made it so near and clear!

The results of our reactions to overcome the threat of Sputnik One benefited the nation so much it vaulted us to the global top of the hill as its undisputed Kings by the end of the 1950’s. Americans have gotten so used to being “King of the Global Hill” we’re missing an important element to the game itself!

You need one other opponent, minimum, for it to have any validity, if it even does then; ideally you’d want every nation to play in the game so its results were indisputable. Americans don’t see what the rest of the world does; a new contest has started which has replaced Global King of the Hill with a totally different type of competition for the world’s nations.

Everyone else sees the reality we made possible through the ‘dot.com’ bust of the late 1990’s early 2000’s; that due to advances in hi speed internet and cellular capabilities, there is no global hill to be King of anymore. No barrier or obstacle remains too separate mankind from communicating instantly to one and other from anywhere either person is in the world. Information can be accessed and used by everyone with the capabilities to do so and the effect of this inspired Thomas Friedman’s recent bestseller about this subject.

America, the world has gone flat, the oceans may as well be solid, the Alps or deserts hardly counting as barrier’s dividing nation’s anymore, and not preventing instantaneous access to communication and information on a scale never dreamed of before.

The world’s been flattened and every other nation is in a race across it except us; we haven’t acknowledged this has even happened, much less joined the race. Most Americans think we’re still winners and still Kings of the Global hill; we’re in for some hard surprises, I fear.

To start out, let’s forget about the advancements to hi speed internet and cellular technologies that have changed the world; let’s agree for the moment the world’s nation’s are still playing the game America permanently won of ‘Global King of the Hill’. Put all of that aside for now and think about what it is that makes America great, what provides us with such prosperity, and why it is we believe Americans have the best Quality of living standards in the world?

Perhaps you believe those things because you grew up as a baby boomer during a time when America was constantly being described as a “classless society” in which every person was in the “Middle-Class.” This view was pushed so hard beginning in the 1950’s and for decades afterwards during the post World War II economic boom the United States had its easy too see why it may be treated as indisputable fact by many of us no matter what. Even if your own economic security and prospects have taken a noticeable dip over the last few years.

We’re told the economy is ‘booming’ and we almost seem to agree automatically, or do agree automatically, that time’s are good because the economy is ‘booming!’ Your dreams of a retirement home in Maine might’ve bit the dust when you lost your union position and some pension benefits when you were forced to take an early retirement, and you may be on food stamps now as well, but that’s just your own bad luck.

What economists have always avoided calculating is distribution of overall income and wealth to the population; when nearly everyone was doing well in the post World War II boom years and we all were Middle Class that didn’t matter so much. But have you heard the news about the decline of the Middle Class? Guess not every American is in the Middle Class; but then I’m certain you’ve heard about the growing spread in income gaps between rich and poor Americans.

If the economy is truly ‘booming’ when the income gap spreads to its widest point apart in our national history and on top of that the middle class is fading too ( Oxymoron, right?), it becomes a little more pressing on those economists to calculate distribution of income and wealth. If America is economically stronger than ever, why am I so broke and my student loans cut when I had a 3.7 GPA?

Why do these FACTS exist?

1): 60% of American households made only 95 cents in 2004 for every dollar they made in 1979! So while the economy boomed and boomed over that quarter century of time average American income’s decreased by 27%?!?

2): All Americans weren’t members of the Middle Class as preached; in fact only 5% of all American households truly qualified as being in the Middle Class. In reality, we called working class unionized laborers because they were paid in middle class wages and benefits, but they were in truth working class. With NAFTA and new International Free Trade Agreement’s devastating unionized workers, that truth is all to clear now.

For decades those unionized positions allowed the distribution of income to be more and more equal leading into the 1970’s. Then something changed. The share of income reaching the bottom 90% of the population was calculated at 67% in 1970; thirty years later in 2000, in a time before NAFTA or job outsourcing became major problem, that amount had fallen to 52%.

While the economy continued to grow and grow. Hmmm…

3): Meanwhile the top 10% of American earners increased their overall incomes from 1970 to 2000 by 15%!!!!

Those are figures arrived at by the respected National Bureau of Economical Recourses in a 2002 report. Google it yourself if you still think all is well; if you still think everything’s great, think of this:

4): Who makes all these huge profits from Globalization and all these Free Trade Agreements? Paul Krugman, liberal economist many despise who now read this, proved that 000.1% of all Americans have made 438% of all the profits from Free Trade and ‘Globalization’.

All middle class? I agree with Krugman on this one; a tiny percentage of Americans are gaining ALL the money while they’ve formed a small oligarchy of ultra wealthy and powerful people who are setting themselves up to keep that wealth and power in a changed future.

That’s the future I was describing as the worst threat to our national security since Sputnik One; can you use logic and see global changes aside Americans have been living in a mythical society by not thinking logically at all?

I hope so, because the world is flat now, the global economy requires America to completely rethink its national policies, and those effects combined with the economical problems faced already by 90% of Americans will feel like Sputnik One just did drop a nuke on us.
